World Zombie Day 2013

Well it's been a good, long while since I last had anything to natter about on here, but yesterday it was the biggest public zombie event of the year, so if anything deserves a blog post it surely must be that.
Saturday October 12th was World Zombie Day 2013, an event which has been going on for some years now (obviously they don't call it 2013 every year, but I rather hoped you'd figured that out already).  Although everyone turns up to have a good time and be part of a massive mob of zombies, there is actually a good cause at the heart of WZD, and that's to raise money and other donations for charity.  Obviously being World Zombie Day, the charities varied from country to country, but they're all in support of the homeless.  Here in the UK, the big gathering took place in London, and food donations were being accepted for the Hackney food bank to help the homeless, whilst at the same time monetary donations could be texted in for St Mungos.
I was planning to meet up with the Silent Studios zombies, who I'd worked with in the past on their Zombie Weekend and the zombie invasion of Big Brother, and we'd agreed to bring food donations, so I'd already got my bag full of canned meat and fish ready to go.

The downside to being half a country away from the capital is that whenever I have a zombie trip to London I always have to get myself ready early.  Unfortunately on this occasion I also overslept, waking up at 7:30 and drastically reducing my makeup time!
Still, I did the best I could with the time I had available, and knocked out some acceptable zombie makeup in just over 45 minutes (I had been hoping to have 2 hours to do a really nice job on the skin tone and texture).  I should mention at this point that my choice of zombie for the day was the zombified version of Walter White/Heisenberg from the TV series Breaking Bad, which meant that for the first time I also had to zombify the back of my own bald head.  Only having one mirror in the house, this proved tricky, but later in the day I was told I'd managed to cover the whole area pretty evenly (phew!).

So I headed out of the flat nice and early to be greeted by rain (grumble grumble).  It was a half-hour walk to the train station, so even with my umbrella there was still some moisture getting through to my water-based makeup, and by the time I was actually on the train to London I was looking an absolute state (and not in a good way).  Luckily I had packed an emergency touch-up kit, so I took a seat close to the toilet and every few minutes kept dashing in to clear up the mess that had become of my face, and re-apply facepaint and blood to repair the damage.  By the time the train pulled up in London I'd made myself just about presentable, and the weather down south was absolutely perfect, so I hopped on the tube and headed to the meeting point at Marble Arch.

Part of the Heisenberg (or Heizomberg, as my friends labelled me) costume is a full-on chemical suit, which looks fantastic but (for obvious reasons) is completely non-porous, so I knew as soon as I started wearing it I'd start to cook.  For this reason I didn't actually bother wearing it for the journey down, so when I arrived at Marble Arch I didn't turn any heads as I was just another zombie amongst the masses already assembled.  Once I was there though, I was happy to suit up, so I grabbed the suit and lab gloves out of my bag and started to climb in (into the suit, not the bag).  Before I'd even got zipped up I had one bunch of zombies run over to ask if I was zombie Walter White, and half a dozen photographers approach to ask for shots once I'd finished getting ready.  By the time they'd all taken their photos, more people came over for pics, and I found that I actually couldn't escape from the entrance to the tube station for quite a while!  This might sound like an annoyance, but when you've put time and effort into getting your costume together (and shaving your head) it does give you a massive buzz to see people appreciating it.

Throughout the next hour - before the actual walk began - the zombie numbers began to swell, and the Silent Studios guys appeared for me to join.  Once the food donations had all been handed over, the walk began.
It was separated into four parts, with an hour's stop between each part for more zombies to join the fray, or for people to grab something to eat or drink.  The first leg took us from Marble Arch to Cavendish Square, then onto Picadilly Circus, from there to Leicester Square, and the final leg took the walk to the afterparty at Denmark Street.  Throughout every part of the walk it was great to see the reactions of the public as a horde of zombies came shambling past.  Some looked on with amusement, some with fear, some with amazement, and obviously there were a few who sneered and walked on by, but they were in the minority, and weren't going to ruin a great day out for the thousands of us :)  At each pit stop I got mobbed for photos again (I've never been stopped for so many pics in my life, hopefully it means there'll be some good ones online somewhere!), until finally I had to leave the proceedings at Leicester Square.  It was a bit of a heartbreaking moment, and I would have loved to have joined the afterparty, but sadly the final Denmark Street stop was at 19:00, and I had to be on a train back to the Midlands at 18:45.

It was an absolutely amazing day out, my first World Zombie Day and the first zombie walk I've actually walked in (having had to leave the Birmingham walk before it actually got started).  I'll definitely be going again next year, but next time I'll book myself a hotel room for the Saturday night and return home on Sunday so I can join the afterparty!  The only question is: which zombie shall I be?

As usual, I was too busy being a zombie to take many photos, but the few I did take are here :)

It's time to cook, Jesse!

Birmingham Zombie Walk 2013

I do love my professional zombie work, and I always look forward to hearing about my next project, but I relish any and all chances to get the makeup out and zombify myself for the day.  This weekend was Birmingham's annual Zombie Walk to raise money for Birmingham Childrens' Hospital, and I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to go along.
Sometimes it seems weird that just over 6 months ago I'd never attempted zombie makeup, and I always love to see how far I've come in that time.  I was (almost) completely satisfied with my makeup for the walk, and completely happy with the costume (now on its third zombie outing).  The only thing I missed on the makeup was that I forgot to apply cake blood to the head and cheek wounds before applying the Ben Nye Fresh Scab, which would have given it a better background.  Everything else I was happy with, and I got some great compliments from people on my makeup.  This look took about an hour to achieve.

The gathering for the Zombie Walk started in Centenary Square at 11:00am, and I arrived just before 12:00.  The zombies milled around being social (except for me, who did my typical zombie thing of staying in character and just growling at everyone... it seemed to get a good response though) until the walk started at 3:30pm, and then after the walk went on to the after party.  Sadly I couldn't stay for the walk itself, or the party, but I spent about 3 hours hanging around the gardens before the walk started and met some brilliant people.  Next year I'll definitely be going back for the whole event, and for the after party.  Fingers crossed 2014 is as sunny as 2013 was!  Here are the few photos I managed to take.

Zombies Invade Big Brother!

So this week my undead 'career' had another high point, as I had the fun of being part of the zombie invasion of Big Brother UK!
Last week I was offered the chance by my zombie family at Silent Studios to be part of 'something huge', but due to confidentiality agreements I had to sign on without knowing what it entailed, or turn it down.  Well I'd rather take the chance and maybe regret it later, so I signed on, had a 3 hour drive down to London (near enough), and found myself at the Big Brother compound at Elstree Studios! Sadly I wasn't able to get Tuesday off work, so wasn't part of the zombie mob which actually wake the housemates by banging on their windows, but I did feature elsewhere.
The premise of the invasion was that there'd been a viral outbreak in the BB compound, so on Friday they were filming some studio footage to go in a mock news report which was shown to the housemates after their undead awakening!
The link to the episode is below, and all of the zombie action takes place in the first 5 minutes or so, so you don't have to wait long for it!  In the broadcast you can see me eating someone's brains, looking confused at a signpost, and as the first zombie to attack the reporter :) Enjoy!

Zombie Photoshoot!

Well the Beyond Television series, Extreme Worlds, is edging ever closer to broadcast date. I still don't know exactly when it'll be hitting our screens, but I know it's in the editing stages at the moment.  A few weeks ago I was contacted by them asking if I could supply some still photos of me as a zombie for them to use in the episode.  Unfortunately seeing as I don't tend to be in a position whilst zombie-ing where I can take photos, I didn't have much to offer them.
So yesterday morning they got back in touch and asked if I had any more photos to give them. Sadly I didn't, but always after an excuse to dress up I got myself in full zombie makeup this afternoon and trundled down the road for a photoshoot. I wasn't too happy with the skin tone whilst in makeup, but once I got outside the sunlight bleached it to a fantastic colour, and I'm really pleased with the way these shots came out.

#DontBeScared The Big Reveal

My moment finally arrived last night!  The giffgaff #dontbescared campaign finally came to a head with the new advert, directed by Cockneys Vs Zombies' Matthias Hoene.  I was really impressed by the final result, I hope you all were too!
I ended up on the screen a bit in the first half of the advert.  Look out for the tall zombie in the purple shirt and grey trousers.  During the ambush of the girl with all of the bags I'm the first zombie she sees and the one who takes her art portfolio.

3 days to go... #dontbescared

Well some of you may have noticed the brief teaser video I posted a couple of days ago for the new giffgaff "#dontbescared" campaign.  In case you hadn't already figured it out, the slightly out-of-focus zombie in the clip is none other than your's truly.  I've been looking forward to seeing how the finished article ends up looking, and now there's only 3 days left to wait!  So on the night of Wednesday May 29th tune into Channel4 or Film 4 at 22:15 GMT to see my big moment!  Of course I haven't see it myself so I don't know how much of me will end up making it into the final cut, but I'm hopeful for at least a few seconds of good quality screen-time.

Zombieing through the ages...

I was just uploading my latest zombie photo to Twitter, and when I went to select it from my zombie photo folder I suddenly felt inspired to make another post.  When I went to the audition last year I'd never even been in zombie makeup before, so here's a nice little selection of how my zombie look has changed throughout the last 11 months!  Some of these are simply down to how the studio in question wanted their zombies to look on the day, and some are developments in my own zombifying skills.

Enjoy!

June 2012: Wish.co.uk's Zombie Audition
The place it all began! On this occasion the makeup was kindly done on-site by one of the other auditionees.

January 2013: Warm Bodies photocall
My first paid zombie job, and as such the moment I was able to call myself a professional zombie!  Makeup done by myself, and one of my earliest attempts (my first ever attempt was 5 days earlier).

February 2013: Makeup test
Not for any event in particular, just a makeup test to try out new techniques.

March 2013: Zombie Bootcamp
My first TV appearence (yet to air), being filmed for a documentary at Ram Training's Zombie Bootcamp.  Makeup done by on-site artists.

March 2013: Birmingham Memorabilia/Comic Con
Just a nice casual event, dressing up as a zombified version of Arthur Dent for Birmingham Comic Con.  Makeup and costume all self-done.

April 2013: Whitchapel
Zombied up for ITV's Whitechapel.  Makeup done by on-site artists, and clothes provided by me but zombified by the costume department.

May 2013: giffgaff advert
Something I can't wait to see on air - the giffgaff advert directed by Matthias Hoene (Cockneys vs Zombies).  The skin tone, eye-shadowing, head wound and nose blood were all done by me, and the veins added by the on-site makeup team.  The costume was a shameless recycling of my Whitechapel outfit!

May 2013: Zombie Weekend promotional video
My very latest (from today, in fact) zombie look. This was for the promotional video for Silent Studios' upcoming Zombie Weekend in August.  Again I provided my own clothes to be slashed/bloodied up there, and on this occasion the makeup/prosthetic was done entirely by my good friend Justin (one of Silent Studios' makeup artists).  He let me keep the face piece afterwards, so I look forward to getting more use out of it in the future!
